Intel to use vertical FINFET transistors in chips by year end - video and update

By Nick Flaherty www.flaherty.co.uk

Intel is aiming to use its vertical FINFET transistors technology in processors by the end of the year. It has demonstrated its Ivy Bridge processor using 22nm process technology running and says these will ship by the end of the year.
The FINFET technology, first revealed in 2002, is a vertical rather than traditional planar transistor structure which Intel says will provide 37% more speed and 30% lower power by having shorter distances while avoiding the problems of leakage and breakthrough that come with the planar gate oxide that is just a few nm thick now.
This will provide more performance at lower clock speeds and lower power for embedded applications, as In-Stat points out here
